Frozen Shoulder Doesn't Have to Be Forever

How Gyrotonic helps restore range of motion — gently, progressively, without force.

What the research says

  1. Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) affects an estimated 2–5% of the general population, with most cases occurring in women between 40 and 60 years of age. Despite being traditionally considered self-limiting, growing evidence shows many patients experience prolonged symptoms and incomplete recovery.  [American Journal of Medicine, 2026; AAFP Clinical Review, 2019]

  2. People with diabetes are 3 to 5 times more likely to develop frozen shoulder than those without — and when they do, symptoms tend to be more severe, more likely to affect both shoulders, and slower to resolve.  [Meta-analytic data, American Journal of Medicine, 2026]

  3. Physical therapy is one of the most supported non-surgical interventions for adhesive capsulitis, particularly when individualised to disease stage. Gentle, progressive movement — rather than forced stretching — is the direction research consistently points toward.  [Redler & Dennis, Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, 2019]

Frozen shoulder is exactly as uncomfortable as it sounds. The shoulder capsule tightens and inflames. Reaching overhead, behind your back, or even across your body becomes painful or impossible. Daily life shrinks — getting dressed, sleeping, carrying a bag all become harder than they should be.

The standard advice is often to wait it out, stretch through it, or manage pain with medication. Gyrotonic offers something more active: a way to coax the shoulder joint back into movement without aggravating the tissue that is already inflamed.

Why Gyrotonic works when other things don't

The Gyrotonic tower uses weighted pulleys to create gentle, supported traction through the shoulder joint as you move. This reduces compression in the capsule while encouraging circulation — key for healing inflamed tissue. Movements are circular and rhythmic, never sudden or forced.

What changes over a course of sessions:

  • Gradual restoration of internal and external rotation

  • Reduced pain and stiffness, particularly the ache that comes with prolonged stillness

  • Improved coordination between the shoulder blade, rotator cuff, and upper arm

  • Nervous system recalibration — the brain begins to trust the shoulder again

We work within your current range of motion, not beyond it. Every session respects where you are today. We also teach you to use your deep upper body stabilizers - your pectoralis major and minor, latissimus dorsi, and engage your shoulders from your trunk - not just your neck - allowing you to learn a deeper range of motion without further aggravating the affected areas.

What to expect

Progress with frozen shoulder is not linear. There are better days and harder ones. But with consistent, intelligent movement, most people regain significant range of motion and return to the activities they had to give up.

We recommend starting with private sessions so your instructor can observe exactly how your shoulder is moving — and where it needs the most support.
