Take a breath right now.A real one. Not the shallow half-sip you've been taking all day — an actual, full breath where your ribs move.

If that felt harder than it should, you're not imagining it. Here's what's happening.

1. Your posture makes physically harder to breathe.  Hunched over a laptop, the front of your body collapses. Your sternum drops. Your ribcage compresses. The diaphragm — the dome-shaped muscle that drives every breath — doesn't have room to descend properly. The result? Breath stays shallow, high in the chest, and never fully fills your lungs. Over years, your nervous system quietly accepts this as normal.

2. Your brain makes it the norm.  Your body is extraordinarily adaptive — which is both a gift and a problem. Long term, shallow breaths makes your brain recalibrates its carbon dioxide threshold, accepting less oxygen exchange as the new baseline. You don't feel breathless because you've adapted to it. You just feel tired, a little foggy, and vaguely tense around the neck and shoulders. Which you've probably also accepted as normal when it doesn't have to be.

3. Your collarbones aren't moving — and they should be. Your breath is three-dimensional. Your lungs can expand forward, backward, sideways, and upward. When you breathe fully, your collarbones gently rise and widen, your ribs expand in all directions, and your whole torso participates. Most people only breathe into a small portion of this space. Try this: place your hands lightly on your collarbones and take a breath. Did they move at all? If not, your breath isn't reaching the top of your lungs.

Try this right now: Sit up tall. Let your sternum float upward — not forced, just lifted. Take a breath wide into the back of your ribs, like your ribs, and maybe even shoulders can gently glide apart. Let your collarbones smile wide. Exhale slowly. Lengthen your neck and gaze upwards, or just close your eyes to give them a rest.

Do that three times. Notice how your shoulders drop a little. Notice how your neck softens.

That's your body getting what it needed.

We'll be here to help give you body what it needs, week after week. Book your next class in with us, to help you recalibrate brain and body.
