Starting a new fitness routine can feel overwhelming, especially when it involves specialized equipment like the Reformer. If you’ve signed up for your first Reformer Pilates class at Mindful Movement, you might wonder what the experience will be like. Let us guide you through your initial session, the types of classes offered, and how the Foundation class sets you up for success by focusing on alignment and body awareness. You’ll also learn how our instructors personalize your experience to help you move pain-free within a healthy range.

Mindful Movement’s Pilates studio features well-lit spaces and state-of-the-art Reformers from the USA (Balanced Body) designed for personalized workouts.
Understanding the Reformer Pilates Experience
Reformer Pilates uses a specialized machine equipped with a sliding carriage, springs, straps, and pulleys to create resistance. This setup allows for a wide range of controlled movements that target strength, flexibility, and balance. At Mindful Movement, we focus on helping you build a strong foundation so you can get the most from every workout - which means lots of mind-body connection, breathing, and feeling how your muscles work together.
Your first class is designed to introduce you to the equipment and the principles behind the exercises. You won’t be expected to perform advanced moves right away. Instead, the goal is to develop body awareness and learn how to align your body properly during each movement, so you can get the most of any workout you do.
Bring socks and a towel - grip socks are mandatory, and available for sale at our studio! If you'd like more range, please remember to bring a pair. It helps keep you, and the studio, clean and germ-free :)
Types of Classes at Mindful Movement
Mindful Movement offers several class types tailored to different levels and goals. Here’s a quick overview:
Foundation Class
We recommend this class for beginners and like to say - Just Because it's Simple, doesn't mean it's Easy! It focuses on teaching proper alignment, breathing techniques, and basic movements on the Reformer. The Foundation class helps you develop the body awareness needed to perform exercises safely and effectively. It's also a great way to work on your form and alignment, if you feel like you're not getting enough out of our other classes.
Align Class
Once you have a solid foundation, work on understanding how alignment - tiny shifts of your body one cm to your left or right, or developing body awareness to sense your body parts in relation to each other, can help you activate the correct muscles. This is wonderful for really "feeling" your muscles - we're not here to whack your body, but here to develop careful, conscious awareness. This is essential if you're someone dealing with pain, a specific body condition, and want more care in your group workout.
Back Care Class and Release Class
These may focus on specific goals such as rehabilitation, taking care of your back even with Scoliosis or other injuries, or using the reformer to find a deep release in your hips, shoulders and neck. So essential if you do weight training, cross-fit, or just need some techniques to relax your body after a long work day.
Strength and Length and Flow Classes We add speed, timing, choreography, or progressive overload and strength building in your sessions to build upon your foundations, and help you add variety and challenge to your movement routine. Prepare for real life by gaining strength, power, dynamic tempo and rhythm to all your workouts.
Your first class will most likely be a Foundation session, where the instructor will guide you step-by-step. Don't be afraid to ask questions! We are here to help.
What Happens in Your First Foundation Class
Getting to Know You
From the moment you arrive, the instructor takes time to learn your name and understand your fitness background, any injuries, or movement restrictions. This personalized approach ensures the exercises suit your needs and help you move pain-free.
Introduction to the Reformer
The instructor will explain the parts of the Reformer machine and demonstrate how it works. You’ll learn how to adjust the springs for resistance and how to position yourself safely on the carriage.
Focus on Alignment and Breathing
Before jumping into exercises, the instructor will guide you through basic alignment principles. This includes:
Positioning your spine neutrally
Engaging your core muscles
Aligning your shoulders and hips
Coordinating breath with movement
Proper alignment is crucial to avoid injury and maximize the benefits of Pilates.
Step-by-Step Exercise Walkthrough
The instructor will walk you through foundational exercises slowly, ensuring you understand each movement. You’ll practice:
Controlled footwork
Core stabilization exercises
How, and where "neutral" spine and pelvis is
The pace is deliberate, allowing you to focus on form rather than speed or intensity.
Feedback and Adjustments
Throughout the class, the instructor provides hands-on adjustments and verbal cues to help you move within a happy and healthy range. This means you’ll avoid pain or discomfort while strengthening your body.
Building Body Awareness
One of the key goals of the Foundation class is to help you develop body awareness. This means becoming more conscious of how your body moves and feels during each exercise. This awareness helps you carry good posture and movement habits into daily life and future workouts.
Why Foundation Matters
Skipping the Foundation class can lead to frustration or injury because Pilates relies heavily on precise movement and control. By starting with a strong base, you’ll:
Improve your posture and alignment
Reduce the risk of injury
Gain confidence using the Reformer
Enhance your overall workout effectiveness
Many students find that the Foundation class changes how they move outside the studio, helping with everyday activities and reducing chronic pain.
Tips for Your First Class
To get the most out of your first Reformer Pilates session at Mindful Movement, keep these tips in mind:

Communicate any discomfort or pain immediately
Arrive a few minutes early to settle in and ask questions

What You’ll Feel After Your First Class
It’s common to feel a mix of sensations after your first Pilates session. You might notice:
Increased body awareness and mindfulness
Gentle muscle fatigue, especially in your core and legs
Improved posture and breathing
A sense of calm and focus
If you experience soreness, it should be mild and short-lived. If pain persists, discuss it with your instructor.
