Common Gyrotonic Techniques and Movement Principals

The Gyrotonic Method emphasizes moving from your seed center, an energetic point three fingers below your navel and in some cultures is called your Dan Tian (丹田) . This fluid force uses your deep diaphraghmatic and abdominal muscles to initiate movement, to give your spine and your limbs deeper support. Unlike many bilateral exercises, the Gyrotonic Principal emphasizes moving your body as a coordinated, unified whole. Especially unique is this idea creating as much as space as possible between your joints to allow for effortless movement - so that many things that seem heavy, difficult or strained - especially for people with low back, neck, or knee pressure - feel lighter, easier, and freely achieved. Gyrotonic exercises vary widely depending on the equipment and the practitioner’s goals. Here are some common techniques and movements:

Stability through Opposition

Instead of forcing your body to be still, and compact, a kind of stabilizing tension is developed by stretching and moving two points are far away in opposition to each other as possible. By lengthing distal points, a stability is created through the spaces in the middle - allowing for dynamic movement, without compressive force

Arch and Curl

This movement focuses on spinal articulation by alternating between arching the back and curling the spine. It helps improve spinal flexibility and strengthens the core.

Spiral and Twist

Spiral and twist exercises involve rotating the torso and limbs in circular patterns. These movements enhance rotational mobility and engage the oblique muscles.

Leg Circles

Performed on the equipment, leg circles strengthen the hip muscles and improve joint mobility. They also help stabilize the pelvis and lower back.

Waves

This technique uses flowing spine movements combined with breath control to open the chest and shoulders, and articulate the spine from the siztbones to neck. It promotes whole body flexibility and relaxation.

Breathing Patterns

Breath is coordinated with movement to increase oxygen flow and support muscle engagement. Gyrotonic breathing focuses on full, gentle, deep exhales to maximize lung capacity and really train deep abdominal muscles like your transverse abdominus, your internal obliques, to really squeeze the breath out of the body in order to soften the chest, and help you find your center. Practitioners learn to control their breath to enhance performance and relaxation.

Unlike many traditional modes of exercise, Gyrotonic

works on a completely different premise: to maximize the spaces in between your joints, to allow for efficient, free, and effortless movement through dynamic, three-dimensional expansion. With the ability to create space, no movements are forced or strained. No more straining your neck, or feeling uncomfortable tugs at your hip flexors or back. With this ability to create ease of movement, all things are easier in life - and you'll find your range of motion, strength, or ability to feel certain muslces increase exponentially.
